Here's a test of "handheld" timelapse photography that I did a few years ago and just found on an old disc:

It was made with a digital still camera on a tripod taking one image each 20-30 seconds. The still images then made one high resolution movie. In the computer, I then put the resulting movie in a 3D layer and moved, panned and zoomed the virtual camera to get the handheld feeling.
